Cute pictures of animals. The picture of the huge iceberg is not fake, isn’t it? What type of camera techniques do they use to shoot the iceberg portion under the sea?

Its wonderful that in a world preoccupied with money, ideology, weapons, killing and environmental degredation that people can take time out to put together a collection of such touching scenes. It is what Teihallrd de Chardin called “one act of love that makes the universe ripple, however slightly”

This is really Nature at its very best, and to think that the big cajunas in in the government do not really care to conserve this marvelous gift. Maybe you should send this joyful photographs to Bush and his gang; maybe just maybe they would think about cleaning our environment and stop hunting.
I enjoy them almost to tears of joy. Myriam

Nice pictures. However, the driver nuzzling up to the polar bear is NOT wise! I also have a question about the iceberg. How did they get it lit up so well FROM BELOW?

Beautiful Pictures. The iceberg picture, however, is not real. I read an article from the guy who did it and he explained how he used 2 different pictures to achieve it. Is is quite pretty, though…

The picture with the ape reading the “Origin of Man” is very profounding, in its own way. I love it.

Elise Meulblok writes:

I do not appreciate the picture with the poor puppies hanging from a clothes line. Whoever would do that to those poor animals is selfish and mentally disturbed. I do not find it cute or endearing, and it definitely does not fit with your “mother nature” theme. How could you for a second find that “natural”? It ruins the spread.

Abby writes:
August 13th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

Elise if you would pay attention to how the dogs were on the clothes line you would see that they were not being strangled by there neck thats why they were wearing that so cute little suits.

Lyla writes:
March 21st, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Dogs, along with many other animals like cats and raccoons, hold their puppies by the neck when they are young. These puppies are being hung on the wire in a very similar manner. Although I agree that it is not “natural” (but then again neither are a lot of these pics), it is still cute and not at all harmful to the puppies.

Rey writes:

Awsome! I too found the “hanging pups” picture somewhat out of sync with the other pics, which all lifted my spirits and brought a smile to my day. Except, yep-you guessed it! An otherwise fantastic photo shoot. Great job!

I have many pictures like these, except for the lightning shots. My Dad was in the Air Force and one of his duty stations was Eilson AFB,Fairbanks Alaska. We lived there for three years (1965 to 1968)We lived at the edge of town while waiting for base housing, every morning and each evening I would take photos in our backyard. There would be Moose,Polar Bear,Caribu,Eagles, quite large Ravens,Snowshoe Rabbits,Artic Fox,and many others I can not recall the names of.I also have many snaps of the Aurora Borealis(northern lights). After a child was killed by a Polar Bear looking for food in the dumpster,my dad wouldn’t allow us to be outside too early or late in the evening anymore.Alaska is one of my favorite and most beautieful places I have ever lived.Unfortunately we were also there for the earthquake that destroyed Anchorage, and flooded Fairbanks,Thanks for bringing back those fond memories.

sorry for those who liked the “origin of man” but its a horrible photoshop….and for that matter 90% of them are largely due to man made objects. dog in a boat with the whale. dog with a floaty. puppies on cloths line. these are not nature shots. good photos perhaps, but not courtesy of mother nature by any means

Lilo writes:

back to the puppies on the clothesline…
they look fine. i love animals, including puppies, and i enjoyed the picture. i found nothing “selfish”, “mentally-disturbed” or “out of synch” about it. it’s an interesting image & my hat’s off to the photographer for the idea!
now, had the puppies been hanging from their ears or limbs, THAT would be cruel — the doings of an extremely uncaring & disturbed person! but they weren’t. instead, they all appear comfortably perched in hammock-like garments. what’s wrong with that?
as a critical photographer myself, i am guessing that what some people may actually be reacting to (negatively) is the dark exposure & poor quality of the print, making the eyes all look dark & a bit lifeless. i think this causes some to assume that the pups are uncomfortable or in pain, etc, but they clearly are not.
in any case, to me, this demonstrates that the “tone” of a picture can release certain emotions in the viewer, without the viewer even being aware of it.

Derek Martin writes:

Jeff writes in regard to-the-puppies-on-the-clothesline picture and the engaging commentary made by Elise:

“instead, they all appear comfortably perched in hammock-like garments. what’s wrong with that?
…as a critical photographer myself”

Manipulating animals to have them pose in unnatural situations that we humans find amusing or touching, is both wrong and phony. It would be similar to taking a picture of a goldfish in a toilet bowl- haha, funny, a goldfish presented as a turd”- and then have Mr. Critical Photographer say:”Oh well, as long as nobody flushes it, it’s OK, I can tell by its eyes!”

This said, I hope to God that Jeff will never post any of his pictures, because I wouldn’t know how to handle “the release of emotions without being aware of it myself”, unless it is a picture of him stepping on an IED.
