If there’s a complaint I have, it’s not that the decision-making was flawed. Gen. Colin Powell, whose ethical standards far exceed that of pretty much any republican OR democrat, believed there were WoMD when we went in. His inability to “fake it” when the truth came out about the lack of WoMD is what caused him to leave (or be asked to leave). To think that Hillary, Powell and others were all fooled by a genius plot by GWB to go to war on false pretenses is ludicrous. Anyone who thinks it happened that way misunderstands the powers and capabilities of a single person, no matter their position.
My complaint is that GWB didn’t come clean when it was clear he should have. Maybe it was ego, maybe it was a fear of telling the parents of the military personnel that their kids may have died for reasons other than those they originally thought they were going to war for. Maybe it was a fear of a drop in poll numbers. Who knows.
But ultimately, when you take a historical perspective, I like to think that in 50-100 years, a democratically-led Iraq is going to be a much more reasonable, pragmatic country to work with on world issues – one that doesn’t turn on a dime on the whim of a single person following a bastardized version of his religion.
If Iraq is a democratic country in 50 years that would be nice, it may be run by radical Islam until then.
The funny thing is, Iraq wasn’t being run by radical Islam until we blew it up… actually it still isn’t. Now there’s a fight for control and yes, radical Islam is a part of it. Saddam did not like radical Islam.
