I must have this pic for my desktop background, higher resolution anywhere?

  2. Solutionman says:

I live in Yakima, Washington. In 1980, our first clue that Mt St Helens had erupted was the sound of thunder. The thunder and lightning continued for hours as long as the ash was still falling.

  3. RPO says:

I was in Costa Rica at the hot springs and its incredible. As the volcano rumbles and erupts the springs will pulse hot water! Its so awesome!

  4. George says:

    That was truely awesome!!! ya!

    :)

  5. Bryson says:

    Coolest picture ever!!!

    :)

  6. Dino says:

Absolutley Amazing footage, the lightning is actually being created by the eruption.

  7. dfghgf says:

why the debate about the picture, just enjoy it, your most likey never gonna see anything like this again.

thats like STINKIN RADICAL man that is sooooo awesome how did you get it!

  10. caitlin says:

i believe that even though matt sounds logical, he cannot make it happen again to prove..it was a oonce in a life time chance so get over it really.as you can see there was alreadya storm at hand brewing(building up,whatever you wish to call it, but that isnt important , what is is….)it was just “waiting” for there to be enough electrons in the air to build up to the point that there is enough electrical current in the air to where the storm can begin..it just so happened that a volcano erupted and caused a beuatiful work of art.

Totally AWESOME!!!!!! Sweetest thing ever! You don’t see something like this everyday. Enjoy it and it’s probably a picture that will go in text books and in history.

  12. mike says:

Volcanoes can cause lightning from all of the particles released into the atmosphere.

  13. ThE DudE says:

in case anyone forgot, that eruption of saint helen lasted 9 hours. Killing 57 people, destroying about 250 homes and covering over 200 sq miles of forest under ash, but don’t let that bring you down cause thats a beautiful picture…

  14. jackie says:

beauty is all around us, this is breath taking

  15. Bob says:

Actually, the lightning is created by the eruption itself. The ash that was launched out of the volcano rub together a lot, creating so much friction that THUNDER comes out. still pretty freakin awesome pic

  16. Rob says:

Is it just me or does this look like an electric charging elephant with lightning TUSKS!!!

  17. Anonymous says:

    this is so cool!

  18. sarah says:

anyone notice that theres sorta half a face in the clouds?

I agree with Rob. This, at first glance, looked a lot like a storm elephant.

    Lol:)

  27. norm says:

It’s a crime that pic is so tiny.

  28. kees says:

Well, actually this is not an volcano during a lightning storm, but the dust particles in the cloud clash and make electricety, so the lightning storm is Beacause of the volcano erupting. still really amazing picture!

  29. Doug says:

    Misleading title.

Lightning is caused by volcanic eruption: Ash swirling around in the cloud creates static electricity.

  30. Jesse says:

    awesome!

  31. X says:

Static discharge occurs during volcanic eruptions already. This is part of the natural process, and is not erupting during a storm per-se. Or at least all of this lightning is not occurring due to the storm.

  32. karin says:

    IT LOOKS LIKE AN ELEPHANT!

  36. James says:

    THE RHINOOOOO

  37. Arieldee says:

    Chuck Norris farted.

  38. Volcanologist says:

This phenomenon is called Nue Ardant, or cloud of fire. The hot ash and convention currents create friction between the particles which causes the lightning, as well as hot ash glowing in the pyroclastic cloud itself. It is a common occurrence around volcanoes with large amounts of pyroclastic flows.
