Walmart’s Data Center

Walmart Data Center

This 125,000 square foot fortress is Walmart’s Data Collection SuperCenter. What it houses is mystery shrouded in the utmost of secrecy. According to a 2004 New York Times article, Walmart had enough storage capacity to contain twice the amount of all the information available on the Internet. For the technically minded, the exact amount was for 460 terabytes of data. The prefix tera comes from the Greek word for monster, and a terabyte is a trillion bytes, the basic unit of computer storage. And sources have said that Walmart has created a system where they connect video of you each time you check out in your file. Now I don’t know about that, even if you could store all of that video, who would analyze it? I suppose with facial recognition software they could figure it out automatically if not now, definitely within a few years. Wild stuff, data is going to be more valuable than gold soon, if it isn’t already, and Walmart has one of the best mines in the land… I think that stock is a great longterm play.

Target already has video of you everytime you use your credit card. I am sure walmart does too.

Im sure this would be a great help if someone stole your credit card and used it at one of the stores.

I have been in this building (in late 2006) It is nothing more than a mail sorting center for customer mail.
